China-UK academic seminar on CCUS successfully held

    On February 25, 2025, the China-UK Academic Seminar on CCUS, organized under the framework of the Steering Committee on Sino-British Engineering and Technology Cooperation, concluded successfully at the UK Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) in London. Over 50 Chinese and British guests attended the seminar, representing institutions including the Chinese Academy of Engineering, China National Building Material Group Co., Ltd., China Petrochemical Corporation, Electric Power Research Institute of China Southern Power Grid, the Chinese Embassy in the UK, as well as the Royal Academy of Engineering, the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, the Industrial Decarbonisation Research and Innovation Centre (IDRIC), the UK Carbon Capture and Storage Research Centre, Imperial College London, University College London, the University of Edinburgh, Heriot-Watt University, the London School of Economics and Political Science, Ovineer Limited, UK Deep Tech Company, and the US National Economic Consulting Company.

    The participating experts conducted in-depth exchanges and discussions focusing on four key topics: experiences and lessons learned from the deployment of CCUS in industrial clusters and various sectors; scaling up CCUS technology pilot programs; the implementation of CCUS in China; and policy exchanges on the large-scale deployment of CCUS.

    Chen Jianfeng, CAE member and Secretary-General, delivered a presentation themed "Large-Scale and Low-Cost Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage Technologies". Peng Shou, CAE member and Chief Scientist of China National Building Material Group Co., Ltd., gave a presentation on "CCUS Technology Innovation and Practical Exploration in China’s Building Materials Industry". Li Yang, CAE member and Chief Scientist of China Petrochemical Corporation, shared insights on "Advances in China’s CCUS Technologies and Projects". Rao Hong, CAE member and Chief Scientist of China Southern Power Grid Co., Ltd., presented on "CCUS and China’s Energy and Power Transition". Wang Rui, Researcher at the Exploration and Production Research Institute of China Petrochemical Corporation, delivered a presentation on "China’s CCUS Roadmap and Policy Support". Prof. Mercedes Maroto Valer, Director of IDRIC and Prof. at Heriot-Watt University, Prof. Paul Fennell from Imperial College London, and Prof. Xi Liang from University College London also delivered presentations respectively. During three Q&A sessions and parallel discussions, experts from both sides engaged in active exchanges, jointly exploring the current technological and industrial status, future development, and cooperation prospects of CCUS in China and the UK.

    On February 26, Chen Jianfeng led a delegation of CAE members and experts to visit Sheffield and Birmingham successively. They conducted field visits to the Translational Energy Research Centre (TERC) and the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Innovation Centre (SAF-IC) at the University of Sheffield, as well as the Birmingham Energy Innovation Centre (BEIC) at the University of Birmingham, and had exchanges with relevant experts.
