The 350th China Engineering Science and Technology Forum, with a focus on low-carbon strategies for offshore energy development, opened in Beijing on July 5, 2022.

Li Zhongping, Vice-president of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), said it’s important to ensure progress of green development of offshore energy and also accelerate the pace to build China into an energy powerhouse and explore deep-sea oil and gas resources.

Li said the CAE as a national high-level think-tank will leverage its cross-disciplinary advantages and the strengths of CAE members to play a greater role in supporting scientific and technological research, talent training and academic exchanges in the field of energy and marine development.

CAE members and experts made presentations and exchanges on marine topics including oil science and technology, low-carbon development of oil and gas, marine gas hydrate, new energy technology, LNG, CCUS (carbon capture utilization and storage), and geothermal development technology. The forum provided a platform for experts and scholars to exchange technologies and strategies and share successful experiences that will support innovation-driven development and help achieve the goal of carbon neutrality.

The forum also inaugurated a research initiative on deep-sea oil and gas development, a major consultancy project by the CAE.
