Research on the Development Path and Major Issues of New Energy-led Power Systems, a major consulting project by the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), was launched at a hybrid online-offline session in Beijing on July 13, 2022. 

The project leader, CAE member Tang Guangfu, introduced the background, content and implementation plan for the research, then analyzed the characteristics and evolution path for energy sources, electricity networks, load, storage and markets. The major issues outlined by Tang such as grid forms, flexible power supply, energy storage and market mechanisms will lay a good foundation for further in-depth research. Participating members from the CAE offered suggestions on the project. 

The research is expected to clarify the energy and power development patterns amid China's carbon peak and carbon neutrality goals, discover the overall development path for a new type of power system, and provide guidance for China’s energy and power transformation as well as scientific and technological research.
