The China-UK CCUS Symposium, coordinated by the China-UK Engineering Technology Cooperation Steering Committee, was held in Beijing on May 20, 2024 amid efforts to facilitate exchanges between the two countries, especially in the field of decarbonisation.

The Symposium was co-hosted by the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng), and the China Association for International Exchange of Personnel, and organised by Beijing University of Chemical Technology (BUCT).

CAE member Chen Jianfeng, also Secretary-General of the CAE, and Professor Martin Blunt from Imperial College London, a Fellow of the RAEng, attended the meeting as conveners for the meeting for China and the UK respectively, and delivered keynote speeches.

The Symposium focused on two topics: "Technology, Progress and Challenges: Carbon Capture, Utilisation, Storage, and Transportation" and "Low-Carbon Development and Emission Reduction Pathways Related to the Building Sector". Participants included academy members and experts from the CAE, Sinopec, China National Building Material Group, BUCT, Shenyang Agricultural University, as well as those from the RAEng, the Royal Society of Edinburgh, the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), the University of Edinburgh, and the University College London (UCL). They gave presentations and engaged in discussions and exchanges.

After the meeting, some experts visited sites such as Sinopec Qilu and Sinopec Shengli Oil Field, and explored the CCUS system, key laboratories, and carbon dioxide capture projects.
