Three engineering academies hold 27th East-Asia Round Table Meeting

The 27th East-Asia Round Table Meeting of Academies of Engineering, held in conjunction with the Symposium on Artificial Intelligence Governance, took place in Beijing on November 28, 2024.


Organized by the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), the conference was jointly hosted by the CAE, the Engineering Academy of Japan (EAJ) and the National Academy of Engineering of Korea (NAEK). Li Xiaohong, President of the CAE, Kinam Kim, President of the NAEK, and Yuko Harayama, Chair of the International Committee of the EAJ, delivered opening remarks at the opening ceremony, which was presided over by Wang Chen, Vice President of the CAE.


In his address, President Li pointed out that the rapid development of global artificial intelligence has presented tremendous opportunities to the world while also posing various risks and challenges.


In keynote addresses, over ten academy members from the three countries delivered reports focusing on various topics, including international cooperation in AI development, the safety and ethical development of AI, challenges in content synthesis of Large Language Models and approaches to enhance AI safety and reliability, as well as policies and multilateral collaborations in AI governance. They also engaged in in-depth Q&A and discussions.


More than 70 academy members and experts from the CAE’s “AI Governance” project team attended the meeting in person. In addition to organizing academy members and speakers to participate online via Zoom, the EAJ and NAEK also provided a live broadcast on YouTube, enabling approximately 150 foreign members and experts to participate online.
