CAE Delegation Attends the China-Sweden Joint Symposium on Medicine

From October 21st to 22nd, 2025, the China-Sweden Joint Symposium on Medicine was successfully held at the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden. More than 50 experts and scholars from both sides attended the symposium, including Wang Chen, former Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), and CAE members Ji Xunming (via video) and Jiang Jiandong, Birgitta Henriques-Normark, former President of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, and Martin Bergö, Vice President of the Karolinska Institutet.

The conference focused on three cutting-edge medical fields: population medicine and public health, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, and respiratory diseases. In-depth exchanges were conducted on topics such as tumor antioxidant mechanisms, vaccine research and development, chronic disease prevention and control, respiratory diseases throughout the life cycle, and environmental health. The opening ceremony was co-chaired by Prof. Martin and Prof. Jiang Jiandong. Wang Chen delivered a keynote report about Population Medicine and Public Health, and Martin gave a keynote report on the Role of Antioxidation in Tumor Progression. In the thematic discussion session on population medicine, Normark introduced the progress in pneumococcal vaccine research and development, and Jiang Jiandong elaborated on the anti-tumor effect and mechanism of Chlorogenic acid; the cardiovascular and cerebrovascular session conducted in-depth discussions on directions such as artificial intelligence-assisted carotid artery research; the respiratory disease session covered content such as COPD diagnosis and treatment policies and environmental health. DING Ning, Deputy Director General (Acting Head) of the Department of International Cooperation of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, delivered a thematic speech titled Driving Collaborative Global Academic Exchange to Build a Healthier Future: Relevant Work of the Chinese Academy of Engineering’s Journal "Engineering". Chinese experts also visited cooperative laboratories at the Karolinska Institutet and conducted targeted exchanges.

During the conference, Wang Chen visited the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA) and met with IVA President Sylvia Schwaag Serger, Vice President Elin Elliot, and Academician Gösta Lemne. Both sides reviewed the history of good cooperation, especially the series of exchanges carried out in fields such as renewable energy and biomedicine. Wang Chen introduced the recent developments of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, pointing out that China and Sweden have strong complementarity and great cooperation potential. Both sides supported strengthening joint research in fields such as innovation policies, energy and sustainable development, forestry, medicine and life sciences, and deepening collaboration under multilateral mechanisms such as International Council of Academies of Engineering and Technological Sciences (CAETS).
