2026 CAE-IVA Joint Seminar on Science and Technology Innovation Policy Held in Beijing
On April 20, 2026, the CAE-IVA Joint Seminar on Science and Technology Innovation Policy was held at the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE). The seminar was jointly organized by the CAE and the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA), and co-organized by Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Focusing on science and technology policy, energy transition, and industrial synergistic development, the event brought together nearly 50 experts from the engineering and industrial communities of China and Sweden.
Prior to the Seminar, CAE President LI Xiaohong and Vice President LI Zhongping met with the IVA delegation. President LI Xiaohong reviewed the long-standing cooperation between the two academies and proposed new collaborative initiatives. IVA President Sylvia Schwaag Serger expressed readiness to restart and deepen bilateral cooperation through this Seminar. Both sides agreed to join hands in contributing engineering wisdom to global sustainable development.
At the Seminar, Vice President LI Zhongping delivered a welcome address, calling for practical cooperation in innovation policy, energy transition, and industrial development. President Serger emphasized the importance of strengthening policy dialogue and personnel exchange between the two engineering communities amid the current global changes.
During the keynote session, CAE member LING Wen outlined China’s sustainable energy trends and hydrogen strategy, CAE member WU Kai presented the lithium battery technology, Professor XUE Lan discussed the bidirectional synergy between AI innovation and energy transition, Professor BI Tianshu analyzed the progress of new power systems, and Professor ZENG Xiaoqin demonstrated innovative applications of solid-state hydrogen storage. IVA President Serger systematically reviewed European innovation trends, IVA member Pia Sandvik shared Sweden’s industry-academia collaboration experience, and Professor Filip Johnsson interpreted the EU carbon trading system. In the round-table discussion, CAE member WU Zhiqiang, IVA members Malin Frenning and Bo Normark, and Professor Wang Xiongfei had in-depth exchanges on the integrated development of scientific and industrial innovation.
Experts agreed that China and Sweden are highly complementary in fields such as energy and advanced manufacturing, and called for the establishment of regular exchange mechanisms to facilitate joint research and technology collaboration.
On April 21, the Swedish delegation and some Chinese delegates visited the Xiaomi Group in Beijing E-Town (Yizhuang), gaining first-hand insights into China’s latest achievements in emerging industries.
The Seminar deepened the dialogue between the two countries in innovation policy and engineering science and technology, laying a solid foundation for future Sino-Swedish collaboration.
