The Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) and the Portuguese Academy of Engineering (PAE) jointly hosted the first CAE-PAE Forum on Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering in Lisbon, Portugal, on 2 September 2026. CAE Vice President CHEN Jianfeng and PAE President Sebastião Feyo de Azevedo delivered remarks at the opening ceremony. They emphasized the importance of maintaining a high-level platform for regular exchanges between the two academies. They also called for closer cooperation between China and Portugal in marine science, technology and engineering to inject fresh momentum into the Blue Partnership between China and Portugal.

Fourteen experts from China and Portugal delivered presentations and exchanged views during the forum. The Chinese experts included CAE members YAN Xinping, LI Jiabiao and LI Huajun. Discussions covered innovations in ocean engineering, ship decarbonization and intelligent shipping, green and smart ports, the sustainable development of deep-sea mineral resources, and offshore oil and gas production.

The Chinese delegation also visited the Centre for Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering (CENTEC) at the University of Lisbon, the National Laboratory of Civil Engineering (LNEC), and the LISNAVE shipyard in Setubal. During the visits, the delegates exchanged views with their Portuguese counterparts on ship hydrodynamics, floating offshore wind power, port safety, green shipbuilding and ship repair.

During the forum, the CAE and PAE signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU), marking a new stage of institutionalized cooperation between the CAE and PAE. The forum and accompanying visits opened new opportunities for bilateral cooperation in the marine sector and laid the groundwork for broader collaboration in engineering science and technology.
