The summit is part of the 618 Fair, or the 2014 China Cross-Straits Technology and Projects Fair, which is being held from June 18 to 21.
Marine bio-pharmaceutical technology refers to the extraction of active ingredients from marine biological resources by modern biotechnology, to make them into drugs, food and other materials.
Fujian has witnessed a robust growth of the technology in recent years, with an estimated 2 billion yuan in industrial added value for 2013, which is about a 70 percent increase from 2010.
In the next stage, Fujian will increase investment on production of marine food, drugs, bio-pharmaceutical materials and bio-products, cultivate a batch of high-tech enterprises and build a complete industrial chain integrating marine pharmaceutical and bio-products, according to the provincial marine and fishery authorities.
Based on that solid foundation, Fujian can develop the connection of the marine bio-pharmaceutical industry with the environmental protection industry, according to Xia Zhaofan, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE).
While the industry is making quick progress and boasting a bright future, Fujian should focus on the quality of marine bio-pharmaceutical food and strengthen its processing, said Chen Yisheng, another CAE member.
