FISU University Games: Flame relay gets underway in host city of Chengdu
The countdown is on to the Summer World University Games, which get underway in China in four weeks' time. The 12-day event celebrates student athletes and is organised by the International University Sports Federation, or FISU. It's held every two years but was postponed in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Guo Tianqi reports from the launch of the flame relay in the host city of Chengdu.
GUO TIANQI Chengdu, Sichuan Province "After traveling to Beijing, Harbin, Shenzhen, Chongqing and Yibin, the flame of the 2021 FISU games has arrived in Chengdu. The first stop of the relay is right here at Sichuan University."
The flame began its journey around China on June 10.
The torch, known as "Rong Huo", is inspired by the ancient name for the city of Chengdu, and symbolizes integration and tolerance.
The blue, green and orange details represent the city's colorful life, and the youth of college students.
The first torchbearer is Wu Minxia, who won five Olympic gold medals for China.
WU MINXIA Olympic Champion, Diving "I hope I can be as energetic and have fighting spirit as the young people."
People from all walks of life have celebrated the arrival of the flame relay in Chengdu.
SHI BI Academician, Chinese Academy of Engineering "Health is everything. I loved sprinting when I was younger, and I still swim now. So even at the age of 65, I still have enough strength to do academic research."
YAO XIA Associate General Manager, Chengdu Rongcheng football club "Chengdu's sporting atmosphere is as hot as this summer. The Chinese Super League football match and the upcoming FISU Games will definitely set fans on fire in Chengdu."
