China's open-source push wasn't driven by US restrictions
Why did China take the open-source path? Was it because of US restrictions and pressure?
Wang Jian, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and director of Zhejiang Lab, told us that China's embrace of open-source AI was not driven by US restrictions, at least from what he knows.
"Several major Chinese open-source models made the decision to open source regardless of US suppression," Wang said. "Some of those decisions were made before ChatGPT emerged, and the models were already open-sourced."
