A meeting was held both online and offline in Beijing on June 10, 2022 for final review of research on geological safety guarantees of towns and waterways in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area, a key consulting research project by the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Based on previous extensive research results and other ongoing research initiatives, the project launched in 2021 focuses on new problems and challenges brought about by water storage operations at Three Gorges.

Special studies were conducted on urban planning development and long-term geological safety in the reservoir area, landslide surges and safety concerns of waterways, protection technology for the reservoir bank slope, geological disaster monitoring and early warning systems, among other topics. Some suggestions were highly valued and adopted by relevant ministries and local governments.

Experts agreed that the research is systematic and adequate with rich information and forward-looking and strategic results, offering targeted and operable policy advice, thereby completing the research goals. It’s agreed that the project team should continue to carry out research on strategic issues such as disaster prevention and mitigation capabilities of hydropower projects in the reservoir area and in the Jinsha River and other western mountain basins.
