The 4th IKCEST “Belt and Road” International Big Data Competition Concluded in Beijing
The 4th International Knowledge Centre for Engineering Science and Technology under the auspices of UNESCO (IKCEST) “Belt and Road” International Big Data Competition 2022 and the 8th Baidu & Xi’an Jiaotong University Big Data Competition concluded on January 10, 2023. The award ceremony was held to award the top 16 teams. Themed on Machine Translation for Low-Resource Languages, the competition focused on the translation between Chinese, French, Russian, Thai and Arabic. This broke through the international machine translation evaluation practice centering on English, and aimed to encourage the youngsters to undertake low-resource machine translation tasks to improve the translation accuracy with technology, narrow the language gap and facilitate communication around the world. The competition attracted 2867 teams from all over the world, with 3138 participants in total of which more than 70% were from top universities in China.
CAE Member WU Manqing, Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the Chairman of IKCEST Governing Board, paid close attention to the competition and recorded messages for the contestants. He pointed out that it was particularly important to strengthen the cultivation of innovative talents, enhance their strength, and establish an internationally competitive talent-cultivation system in the field of big data. ZHENG Qinghua, executive vice president of Xi'an Jiaotong University put that the competition highly focused on the demand of various industries in society, and thus has driven industry development through technological innovation.
After fierce competition of the preliminary and the second round, 16 teams have entered into the final round to present their technical proposals. The team "Pisces Safin 11" from Pengcheng Laboratory submitted a "sustainable multilingual translation training proposal based on domain progression" combined with the integration method of multilingual models to achieve continuous iteration of Chinese-Arabic translation performance, which was highly recognized by the experts and won the international grand award. The main members of this team were from University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen) and so on. The team "Nanshan North" from Pengcheng Laboratory and the team "Babelfish" from Harbin University of Technology won the international first prize, three other teams won the international second prize and 10 teams won the international third prize.
The competition was co-organized by IKCEST, China Knowledge Centre for Engineering Science and Technology (CKCEST), Xi'an Jiaotong University and Baidu Company. It aimed to find out more AI talents with self-learning and innovation ability and practical experience, give full play to the advantages of technology and resources, further promote the deep integration of "government, industry, university, research institute, and application", and comprehensively contribute to AI talent cultivation in China.
