Over 30 Experts Attend China-UK Workshop on Smart Cities in Hangzhou

The China-UK Workshop on Smart Cities was held in Hangzhou on July 16-17, 2019, jointly hosted by the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) and the Royal Academy of Engineering, and co-organized by the second academy of the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation Limited, the Administrative Center for China’s Agenda 21, the Zhejiang Provincial Development and Reform Commission, the Zhejiang Association for Science and Technology and the Hangzhou Yuhang District People’s Government.

 

More than 30 experts from China and the UK gathered in Hangzhou to discuss the theory and technological application to advance smart city development in China and the world, with a focus on large-scale urban areas. Participants included Pan Yunhe, former Executive Vice President of the CAE as well as CAE members Zhong Shan, Zhou Liwei, Chen Jing and Wu Zhiqiang along with David Tomlinson, International Secretary and Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, Keith Howells, Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and others.

 

With the theme of “Smart City Technological Application: Challenges and Solutions,” the event was officially opened on the morning of July 16 when Pan and Tomlinson and representatives of local organizers delivered speeches. More than 200 people attended the meeting, including CAE members, Fellows of the Royal Academy of Engineering, experts, researchers, representatives of government and entrepreneurs from home and abroad. Pan delivered the keynote speech on “Smart City and the Economy.”

 

The workshop had five topics: technology applications for smart city development; the role of smart/sustainable city standards and how to implement them; urbanization, smart cities and sustainable urban development; capacity building for smart cities; and smart cities and future communities.

 

Experts of two countries discussed different perspectives as researchers, designers, implementers, managers and users of smart cities, shared experiences and results in the development, and gave an outlook for the overall development and future trends.

 

At the roundtable meeting held on July 17, participants summarized experiences and opinions and suggested using the knowledge and practices in the two countries in developing countries. CAE members Wu Zhiqiang, Zhong Shan, Zhou Liwei and Chen Jing attended the meeting and interacted with experts from the UK. After the meeting, participating experts visited The CityOS, a top provider of smart city solutions, and China (Hangzhou) Artificial Intelligence (AI) Town.
